Disney’s live-action remake of their 1992 animated classic sticks close to the original. It does, however, add some new side stories for Jasmine and the Genie. Because when you have a big star like Will Smith in the movie, you better believe his character will get its own side story. I mean, they even made him the narrator. Apart from the new side stories, the movie is the same as we remember it. It features the same hit songs and adds a new song for Jasmine to inspire feminism.
As is to be expected with Disney, the production quality in costume and set design is perfect and much more dazzling than in the animated classic. After all, Disney spares no expense when it comes to the set and costumes.
Will Smith is great as the Genie. He portrays the Genie in his own style and steers clear of the late Robin Williams’ version. The movie benefits from Smith giving his own take on the character rather than impersonating Williams. The Genie songs are great. Smith performs the songs giving off Fresh Prince of Bel-Air vibes.
