Gary Dauberman’s directorial debut breathes new life into the Annabelle franchise and the Conjuring Universe as a whole.

WARNING: Spoilers Below!!

After writing the screenplay for 2017’s It, Dauberman brings a lighter, comedic, kid-centred vibe to the Annabelle franchise. He does well to avoid jump scares, for the most part, initially teasing us with what we think will be jump scares, like when Annabelle Higgins shows up at the Warrens’ door and runs off instead of scaring the babysitter. Dauberman instead saves all the scares for after dark, which is a cliché horror element, but after all the teasing it’s welcome.

I also like how he had an establishing shot of the Warrens’ deadly artifact room, foreshadowing the horrors that will be terrorizing the characters later that night while keeping the audiences on the edge of their seats expecting something bad or scary to occur.

If this is to be the final chapter in the Annabelle trilogy it would be a great way to end it. Annabelle Comes Home deserves an 8/10.
