So here we are at the beginning of a new year and a new decade. And while it's too early to give you a preview of the coming decade here is our preview of the first four months of 2020. As usual, the beginning of the year doesn't usually bring us the big blockbusters or highly anticipated movies, but there could be some surprise hits. Here are the movies we think will be worth checking out this winter (yes winter lasts until April in Canada).

Dolittle

Release: January 17

If any movie can be an early blockbuster this one has the best chance. Robert Downey Jr. stars as the titular character, in his first non-Tony Stark role in six years. The movie follows Doctor Dolittle on a daring adventure to find a cure for the severely ill Queen Victoria. The movie boasts a talented cast with the likes of Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen as antagonists. It also features the voices of stars like Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Tom Holland, Selena Gomez, Kumail Nanjiani and more, as various animals.

Bad Boys For Life

Release: January 17

We then have our first sequel release of the year, releasing 17 years after the previous entry. This time not directed by Michael Bay. The plot synopsis states that the bad boys are back together for one last ride. If anything I hope the film is more enjoyable than the trailer they released.

The Gentlemen

Release: January 1(UK)/January 24(US)

The new Guy Ritchie film seems reminiscent of the director's earlier films and seems to promise a return to form for the director's distinctive style. The film boasts a cast that consists of Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell. The plot summary states that the film follows Mickey Pearson, played by McConaughey, who runs a Marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he is looking to cash out his business, it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.

The Turning

Release: January 24

This one is for the horror fans out there. This adaptation of Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw" stars Mackenzie Davis as a newly appointed nanny, Kate, who's charged with the care of two troubled orphans, Flora (Brooklynn Prince) and Miles (Finn Wolfhard). Kate soon learns that the children and their house contain dark secrets and everything isn't as it appears.

Birds of Prey

Release: February 7

Margot Robbie returns to the role of Harley Quinn. After breaking up with the Joker, and after Suicide Squad bombed (and is being rebooted next year), she teams up with Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Belle), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). Together they protect a young girl, Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), who is being hunted down by crime lord Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor), aka Black Mask.

Onward

Release: March 6

You just know that Pixar's new film is going to be one of the best movies in the coming year. Pixar movies have it all: humour, heart, adventure, fantasy, etc. Featuring the voices of Chris Prat and Tom Holland, the movie follows the brothers as they try to fix a spell to bring their father back to life for a day.

A Quiet Place: Part II

Release: March 20

John Krasinski returns to the director's chair to continue the story of the Abbott family in the dystopian future he introduced in the first film. After the events at their home, the surviving Abbotts embark into the unknown prepared for the worst. Unfortunately, the family has more to fear other than the deadly monsters.

No Time To Die

Release: April 3

This is will be the last Bond film to have Daniel Craig reprising the iconic role of Bond. The film has Bond retired five years after putting away Blofeld (Christoph Waltz). Jeffrey Wright returns as Felix Leiter and entrusts Bond with a mission. The film has Rami Malek playing the big bad and Lashanna Lynch as a new '00 agent' following Bond's retirement. I have moderate hopes for this film. The past few films have been a hit or miss. Let's hope the film has a fitting conclusion for Craig's Bond.
